A 20-year-old Vanderhoof girl has gone missing at a party during a camping trip at Hogsback Lake over the weekend.
Madison Scott was last seen at 3 a.m. on Saturday morning. Friends say when they woke up she was gone. The Vanderhoof RCMP received a call from her family that she had not returned home on Sunday at 2 p.m.
“That’s when we called search and rescue,” Staff-Sergeant Dave Beach of the Vanderhoof RCMP said Monday. “Before search and rescue go out they have to get authorization from the police because we coordinate the search,” he said.
Beach added that Scott’s phone was last used at 7 a.m. on Saturday morning – approximately four hours after she was last seen.
Police have located her tent and her truck but have no leads to her whereabouts at this point.
The investigation has determined that Madison attended a party on Friday night in an area well known and used by locals. The area is a former Forestry campsite, which also has a parking lot and boat launch area. Police also know that another party was held there Saturday night.
“Right now we’re trying to follow the leads from the people that were at the party – but we have no significant leads so far,” said Beach.
Volunteers from Nechako Valley Search and Rescue, Burns Lake Search and Rescue and Prince George Search and Rescue, along with both the Vanderhoof and Fort St. James RCMP detachments were searching for her Sunday and all day Monday. A swift water rescue team was also called in to assist.
On Tuesday the physical search of the area was suspended until new information can be obtained that would allow searchers to focus their efforts in another direction than already considered.

. with ginger hair. She was last seen wearing a black t-shirt and blue jean Capri pants. The RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in finding Scott.
“We believe someone who was in the area this weekend may have seen Madison or even spoken to her,” said Sgt. Rob Vermeulen, spokesperson with E Division. “It is important that we determine what happened that night, what her plans were for Saturday and the rest of the weekend. We have conducted some interviews, but it is important that we speak to anyone and everyone who will help piece together the bigger picture. We still have many questions as does Madison’s family.”

Prince George, B.C.- A helicopter continues to scour the Hogsback Lake area south of Vanderhoof for missing 20 year old Madison Scott. Family Friend, Dan Wingham, says it costs $800 dollars an hour to have the helicopter in the air, so an account has been set up at Integris Credit Union for donations. He says the community of Vanderhoof has come together to support the family who has deep roots in the District. “The Scott’s are an amazingly generous, close and strong family. I got to speak with Madison’s mom this morning and they are optimistic, as we all are.” Wingham says today is the day they will find Madison. Scott was last seen Saturday at 3:00 in the morning. Anyone who was in the Hogsback Lake area this past weekend is asked to call police. Wingham says donations can be made at any Integris Credit Union in Northern BC which will go towards continuing the search for Madison

The search for Madison Scott is shifting gears, but it goes on.
The grid search has been halted around the area at Hogsback Lake near Vanderhoof where the 20-year-old was last seen.
Both land and water were scoured by family, friends and Search and Rescue personnel working with the RCMP but came to no conclusions.
The ground search has been halted by RCMP, but police involvement continues, said Vanderhoof mayor Gerry Thiessen.
“The police are still very much involved, they have told us this is a priority for them so they are working all the avenues they can find to reach a positive conclusion in this terribly sad time we are going through,” said Thiessen.
POLICE SHIFT FOCUS
Interviews are the focus of police activity right now. Everyone is being spoken to who was at the parties Friday and Saturday nights at the Hogsback Lake campsite, anyone who was travelling in the vicinity, anyone who talked to Scott prior to her departure for the campsite on Friday, anyone who has the smallest piece of the puzzle.
“We must consider all possibilities,” said RCMP provincial spokesman Sgt. Rob Vermeulen. “We are trying to piece together her movements, and that means needing to contact anyone who might be able to give us a clue.”
The Mounties have added another layer of policing with the North District Major Crime Unit.
“It is better to call them in early than late, but no we do not have any indication that a crime has been committed,” said Vermeulen.
“If they are part of the process right away, it helps. They are certainly great interviewers and have a lot of skills that can be useful right now. They are an excellent resource.”
Scott was last seen at about 3 a.m
. Saturday morning at a party at the Hogsback Lake forestry campsite.
She had pitched her tent there earlier on Friday, and police easily located that and her pickup truck, but there was no sign of the young woman.
Funds are being gathered to help a private search continue in the area. A statement issued on Facebook said “Anyone wishing to contribute to the search efforts for Madison Scott can donate to the Madison Scott Search Fund at any Credit Union account #80234286. Donations will be used to fund the helicopter search and are greatly appreciated.”
Thiessen said the efforts to help find Scott are coming from near and far.
“We really appreciate the RCMP’s commitment to this, and all the hard work done by all the Search and Rescue groups from the outlying communities as well, they all came together to help us,” said Thiessen.
SCOTT’S ROOTS RUN DEEP
Scott is known well around Vanderhoof. The 20-year-old grad of Nechako Valley secondary school is part of a large extended family that has deep roots in the Omineca town.
“The Scott family has been a huge part of our community for a very, very long time,” said mayor Gerry Thiessen. “Not only are they involved in the community, they have given a lot to our community, really stuck with our community through some tough economic times. So this is a very tough time for them and for everyone in Vanderhoof.”
The family’s community connections are tied to iconic town businesses like L&M Lumber and Scott Foods.
Madison herself is a popular life-long resident of the town. She keeps busy with summer and winter sports of all kinds, is an avid motorcycle rider, she has a nose ring and a wrist tattoo of a bird, and is described by those who know her as someone who grabs life with both hands and smiles for the whole ride.
Thiessen said the whole town, and many neighbouring people, rallied to Hogsback Lake for the search effort as soon as it was announced Sunday that she was missing. “There was an overwhelming response,” he said, and now that continues as the mystery deepens.
A Facebook page, Help Find Madison Scott, has been set up to draw attention to her mystery.

Police later found her truck and tent at a campsite at Hogsback Lake about 25 km south of Vanderhoof but a massive search by air, ground and water by 150 people failed to find any other trace of her.
RCMP called off the ground search for Scott on Monday, but friends and family say they’re raising money to pay for a further helicopter search. A Facebook.com site has been set up to organize the effort.
The town’s mayor Gerry Thiessen knows the Scott family, and says the disappearance has hit the town hard. “As you talk to people and see people on the street, it’s that sense that your stomach has just kinda dropped out of you for a second here. It’s very, very difficult and very tough on your emotions,” said Thiessen.

More Helicopter searches, some private, and one by the RCMP with an infrared camera
. The volunteer vehicle road search continues expanding outward. Door to Door canvasing in the Mapes and Blackwater areas continues. Searches of some gravel pits start.
As search and rescue did not find any evidence or tracks on the trails or roads leaving Hogsback Lake campsite the official ground search was called off, but the RCMP investigation continues with a team from Vancouver leading it. Friends and family started their own search of trails and area roads. Roads were searched for tracks leading off onto spur roads or on trails. Canvassing of residence in the Hogsback area began
. A large number of individuals with trucks and 4 wheelers joined the search. A Facebook page was started, and a temporary web site made. The initial missing persons poster was emailed to friends, family and acquaintances across BC and they were posted in a wide range of communities.

Vanderhoof RCMP along with Search and Rescue Teams from Vanderhoof, Prince George, Burns Lake and Fort St. James conducted extensive air, water and ground searches on Sunday and all day Monday. Upwards of 150 volunteers searched, including horseback patrols, of the shorelines, walking and ATV trails and the logging roads in the area. Water areas were also explored with boats and side scanning sonar. Despite search efforts of the area, Madison is still missing.At this time a physical search of the area has been suspended until new information can be obtained that would allow searchers to focus their efforts in another direction than already considered.
